The Ethiopian Roads Authority (ERA) said Chinese contractors have taken part in the construction of road projects valued at 24 billion Birr during the past ten years.
Authority communications director, Samson Wondimu told ENA on Wednesday that a total of 234 road projects were undertaken in the country with an outlay of 55 billion Birr between 2001 and 2010.
Some 53 of the stated number of projects were constructed by foreign companies, he said, adding, Chinese contractors constructed 41 of the projects, which cost 24 billion Birr .
Samson said this shows that Chinese companies are contributing a lot to the country’s road sector development program.
He said engagement of the companies created competitiveness among the local contractors and created opportunity for transfer of technologies.
