Ford enters into Ethiopia's Car Market

By Binyam Tamene

Ries Engineering Share Company has joined the “ever increasing automobile business”. The company has come to an agreement with Ford Motors and will be its sole representative in Ethiopia.

According to Deputy Managing Director, Fikadu Mengistu, Ries faced a lot of competition for partnership with Ford, but due to its “huge experience”, his company won the fight.
Ford didn’t have a representation here in Ethiopia, after its previous representative, Ethio Investment Group, was bankrupt two years ago.
But now Ries Engineering, well-known for importing and distributing vehicles and spare parts for about 45 years, will take care of the representation and officially opened, last Thursday, the first showroom dedicated solely to Ford cars.
Fikadu said at the occasion: “Prior to this deal, we tried to assess the automobile business and found out that there is an ever increasing automobile demand here”.
Besides that, he pointed out that most of their customers are dealing with huge projects that need various machineries construction and agricultural equipments. “With this partnership, we hope to give them a one stop shop service,” he said.
Ford Automobiles of Ford Ranger pickup, Everest, and Fiesta Sedan, are currently available in the new show room. But the supply is about to be expanded, the company said, stating a Ford Van and Minibus will be available soon.
There were other companies interested in the deal, but Fikadu declined to name any of them. Only three of these companies were among the final choices. Ford decided to settle for Ries, he said. “Our Company will also provide maintenance services and accessories to Ford vehicles.”
The first 55 vehicles composed of various models have now reached Addis Ababa and will be displayed along with Earthmoving, Agricultural and power generating equipments, mainly Caterpillar, Massy Ferguson and Perkins brands.
