Adama, December 9, 2010 (Adama) The ministry of agriculture said that the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has launched a pilot project to advance the agriculture extension program to a higher level with an outlay of three million US dollars.
Speaking at a workshop organized in connection with the launching of the project, agriculture state minister, Wondyerad Mandefro said the project will play vital role in ensuring the food security of farmers.
He said the project will help to support the agriculture extension program through technology and train skillful professionals for the successful implementation of the program.
OXSFAM U.S. country representative, Abera Tola on his part said the project is expected to benefit 180,000 farmers.
Abera said the project is aimed at strengthening 50 agriculture development training institutions and improving the skill of agriculture extension professionals in three years.
Organizers of the workshop said that Prime Minister Meles Zenawi's request for Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support the agriculture sector is becoming fruitful.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, OXSFAM U.S. and Sasakawa Global commended Prime Minister Meles for his effort toward the operationalization of the project.
Heads of regional agriculture bureaus and agriculture research institutions are taking part in the two-day workshop organized to discuss on the pilot project plan.
